Blessed Are Those Who Mourn For They Will Be Comforted

Today is the Anniversary of my Mother’s passing. Leading up to this day seemed “normal” until certain memories started to creep in my mind and I wanted to share them with her, saying “remember when…?” Only to be startled in that moment of the reality that she is gone and then a flood of emotions surfaces to tears. As that is happening, just then I feel the Lord’s presence and hear Him say to me: “Blessed Are Those Who Mourn, For They Will Be Comforted.” (Matthew 5:4).

I believe Mourning in itself is not a one-time occurrence. It is an external expression of one’s grief usually following the death of a loved one. It mostly encompasses behaviors and customs and a period of bereavement.

The feeling of loss can be triggered at any time… by a memory, a picture, a scent, a song, a movie, even food and then all of a sudden grief arises and we internally experience loss all over again and then express our mourning outwardly (tears, moodiness, alone time, sleeping a bit more, etc…) just to mention a few.

So now what do I do? My emotions are real. The loss and sorrow are very real. I realize now what has transpired during my walk with God is that God is always there for me. He is there if I have a slight (or not so slight) meltdown, if I expose my emotional vulnerability, guilt, regret, anger, or whatever else that may pop up and out of me. Jesus is there for me-to comfort me, to hear my groans through my prayers, to see my heartbreak and to collect my tears when they fall.

Jesus is my comfort. He is El Roi-the God who sees. He sees everything that is going on in my life and yours. He is there whether we are aware of Him or not. He is there to hear our prayers and to intercede for us before God when Satan tries to defame our character and attack our weaknesses. He sees us when go to Him for repentance so that we may renew our hearts back towards him.
